The Work of Breathing

After watching Solomon struggle to breath as he played the blues, and after having seen Solomon's treasured memories of his daughter Judy, Alex goes to Laurie's house where he encounters a different Laurie than he is used to. Suddenly the roles are reversed and Alex is the one providing encouragement. As he attempts to comfort her, we hear him use the following words, "You know, I just think a child and a parent should speak with each other, that's all." (p235)

Explain the importance of these words to the overall plot/theme of the book. Be sure to refer to every situation in which those words hold significance. Has Alex's attitude changed since we first met him at the start of the book?

Well personally I think after Alex looked at his situatuation from sols point of veiw he realizes that a kid that stays mad at his or her parents forever really hurts the parent and his parents always care no matter what happens. After seeing that Laurie has the problem that exactly reflects upon what he saw he pretty much has help her but then he realizes that he has the same problem with his parents

I think those words are important because, right there, Alex was being a little hipocritical and I think if he is going to talk the talk then he needs to walk the walk. Hipocrites aren't right. I personaly don't like hipocrites. They shouldn't say something if they are doing the opposite. Like if a parent is drinking and smoking then they shouldn't tell you that you shouldn't start because they did.

He is saying that you will get mad at your parents and never want to speck or see them again, but eventually you will realize how much you truly need them and you don't give up on them if your just mad. They play a big roll in the plot/theme of the book because parents are the main reason things happen in this book. One reason is when his parents got divorced and he hated his dad so much that he got drunk and was going to drive to his dad's house to tell him off. Another thing is when he is always talking to his mom to help her get through the divorce. Also when Sol keeps talking about his daughter that never comes to see him. Also, when Laurie gets mad at her mom for getting pregnet. Another time is when Alex finally went home when his parents were back together and said that he was sorry for all the trouble he had caused them. The other one is when Judy finally attends the second concert and sees her dad after all the years she hasn't seen him. Oh yes, his attitude has changed he has became a better person, more responsible, caring, nice, understanding and loving. He is a all around better person...I think.

Alex is really trying hard to encourage Laurie to at least speak to her mother if not go down a few weeks this summer.

It has a lot of importance to the book because it shows that alex wants to talk to his parents too and is teling laurie what he thinks she should do. It shows a lot what alex feels and thinks and how far he has come.

The words that Alex says to Laurie are important because they will help any bad parent-child relationship. Alex needs to get along with his parents to stay out of trouble and to keep himself and parents happy. Laurie has to be able to comprehend with the fact that her mother has a new husband and baby. If she doesn't she would struggle to understand her mother's love for her and that her mother wants her to be part of the new life that her mother has. Finaly, we have Judy and Sol and we find out how much Sol cares about his daughter. If Judy had not given Sol a second chance she would have never known how much he loved her. Also he would have died and she would never be able to try again with questions still unanswered. Alex's attitude has changed dramatically. He's starting to understand the importance of family and friends. He has come to realize that the world doesn't revolve around him and has been able to truly see some people that he was blind to see before.

I think Alex learned a lot threw out the book, but in this chapter, I think he finally learned that Sol cannot live forever, so Alex learned to step it up, and show all his feelings towards Sol and not hold back.

Well after seeing how Sol's daughter didn't spend time with sol and how bad it hurt him and then how bad it was hurting laurie because she seperated herself from her mother it's now that he's seeing its a lose lose situation for both sides, nobody wants to be without their kids or parents, nobody with any morals at least wich i beleive everyone in this situation does, and through all this alex see's that if it will help sol and laurie to get back together with their loved ones he see's that he better start settling with his parents before it gets that bad

Alex has changed alot i think that he respects his parents now and he is ready to get along and change his life for the better

Alex has changed a lot since the begining of the book. He is nicer and hppier and he thinks things trough. He lets people in and cares about people. He sees how Sol has made a mistake in his life and didn't have the second chance like he did. He sees how much pain Sol is in and he thinks that no one should be in that much pain for that long and every one deserves another dance.

I think Alex realized that your parent always love you after anything you do. And he feels sorry being so mean to his dad and mom. And feels Laurie should just talk to her mom.

Anonymous said...

i think that thoughs words are important because i think that it made alex relize that he should take his advice and i think that he finally relized the importance of his parents.
I think that alexs attitude has changed eminsley because i think that sol has changed him by showing him that being old dosnt mean you have to be grouchy and that there is still alot of time left so i think alex grew up alot in the book, also i think alex learned how to care for someone may it be laurie, his mom, or sol, or other people at the home he still took something from the expirence!

Anonymous said...

i think that he was trying to say that its good to have conection with parents and you cant just avoid them forever

Anonymous said...

This is saying that sometimes you do get mad at your parents and wont want to talk to them but you will eventually will need them for something and you will wish that you hadent been to mean.

Anonymous said...

Wel wel wel i think that sence sol had the guts to talk to him because then he learned his lesson. and it reflect against him.

Alex's attitude has changed to "kill father and teacher" to "help with family and other loved ones and total forgiveness". Alex is trying to give some awfully great info for the comeback of Laurie's family life in her mind. He is giving her a chance to refill her family spirit.

Anonymous said...

never stay mad just let if pass or it will bulid up and burst

Anonymous said...

Take what you have because you might lose it in the future. Like he didn't even know who Judy was. He missed a lot in her life, he sure missed out.

Anonymous said...

i think this means Alex should not be mad at his parents and his parents should not be mad at him and they should speak to each other every day and night along with laurie and her monther and Sol and Judy

Anonymous said...

He is saying that even though your parents mess up, in this case not vistining her while she was sick and mother being killed, they always deserve a second chance. We all make mistakes and sol made a VERY big one! Also it was kind of important that Alex said this to Sol because Alex had some problems with his parents and he just had to accept it, get thgough it and move on

Anonymous said...

I think he's telling Laurie advice since he has seen how much it hurt Sol. I think Alex has changed because the advice he has given id resonible.

Anonymous said...

I think those words are important because Sol never got the chances to talk to his daughter very much and it really affected their relationship, and sol. So solomon was trying to get the point to Alex that how Judy and Sol were is how he and his father could end up.

Anonymous said...

Alex is telling Luarie this when he hasn't even talked to his parents about the divorce situation. He is being somewhat of a hypicrit.

Anonymous said...

This is important to the overall theme of the book because it is a big point that the auther is trying to make. This shows that Alex is learnig and growig and that his attitude has changed alot from being selfish to bein caring, responsible and loving towards other people now.

Anonymous said...

I think thouse words are important because alex relized that he doesnt need to stay mad at his parents frorever afer seeing lauries atttitude aganst her mother he also relized he needs to take his own advice

Anonymous said...

the importance of these words are that when parents and children talk they are communcating with each other. the best way to understand each others feelings.( able to connect). alex's attitude has changed drumaticly since the beggining of the book.

Anonymous said...

These words applie to Alex's realationship with his perents and Sol's realationship with his dauter.

Anonymous said...

a perant and a child should love eachother and if they talk and hang out the get to love eachother more

Anonymous said...

Alex's words are important because it shows that he really understands the importance of parents getting along with children after seeing what happened with Sol and Judy. He has changed a lot over the book since the beggining because he probably wouldnt have said this to Laurie in the beggining without the knowledge he has now.

Anonymous said...

in my opinon i think this means ya sure you get mad at your parents every once in a while, but still you need to always love them because they will always be right by your side with you, and thats what makes them great parents!!

Anonymous said...

Yes i personally think that Alex has changed. He is not as selfish and is caring about everything. like when we first met Alex it was all about him.

Anonymous said...

this is taiking about how alex and his dad didnt talk to each other and sol and judy didnt talk to eachother and every kid needs to talk to his parents

Anonymous said...

I think Alex is realizing that it you need to forgive people for their mistakes and you can't just ignore them and stop talking to them especially if their your parents.

Anonymous said...

the importance of this quote is that he uses it for Laurie and her mom, Sol and Judy, and him and his parents. Yes i do think that Alex has changed from when we first met him.

Anonymous said...

I think those words are important to the plot because they show that in order to make something work you have to make an effort. This shows up when Sol tries to make up with Judy by singing to her or when Alex’s dad tries to say sorry to Alex on many occasions.

Anonymous said...

I think that are important because you should always have communication with your parents. That there my be sad times in your life but there are always peolpe in your life to help you through it.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I do think that Alex has changed more in the book by being more responsible, caring ect. Because in the passage about talking to Laurie it seems like he is more caring towards her/everybody else, and I think this is an important event in the story by the characters changing or the importance of the characters.

Anonymous said...

Because he doesn't have a good relationship with his parents and he thinks that he should fix his relationship with his parents.

Anonymous said...

I think that after Alex took a step back and looked at it all, his drunk driving, his relationship with Laurie, Mom and Dad breaking up, Dad cheating on Mom, and Alex's relationship with Sol, he realized that alot of these things would have been alot easier to overcome and get through if he would have just expressed his feelings and talked to his parents. I think he now wants Laurie to learn from Alex's mistakes so she doesn't make some of the same ones.

Anonymous said...

Its about how you need your parents to be there for you even when you dont think you do. And you never relise how much you need them. Also Alex's attitude has changed a lot since the beginging of the book.

Anonymous said...

Alex is encouraging Laurie to get together with her mom and talk things over to get things right.Alex on the other hand has the same problems with his parents and needs to talk them over with them.

Anonymous said...

i think a child should never hate there parents enough to not wnat to see them

Anonymous said...

i think that alex is really trying to be a really good friend and help laurie actually talk to her mom and tell her how she feels about the new baby.

Anonymous said...

I think that Alex's point of view on his parents have changed dramidacly sice he started learning about Sol's relationship with his daughter. I that that he is being a little bit hipacritacl when he is talking to Laurie though becaue even though he has learnded that he doesn't try to do it.

It shows alex's feelings [his true feelings]. it also shows that alex needs to talk to his parents and Laurie needs to accept her moms baby.

Anonymous said...

I believe that he says these words to Laurie because her and her mother need to communicate more not just fight all the time. If they were to talk then maybe Laurie wouldn't feel how she feels at this point.

Anonymous said...

I think Alex learns from Sol that you just cant stay mad a someone you love and hold so dearly to yourself.

Anonymous said...

Alex has changed alot since the stat of the book he is owning up to his actions and mending bridges with his parents these words make alot of significance.

Anonymous said...

I think These ar important because he is giving Laurie a suggestion to help his problem, and it shows he is a good friend. He used to be the one cuddled by Laurie and i think it is important and special to Laurie that she knows she also has a good friend to support her.

Anonymous said...

Yes because Alex has softend his shell so to speak and he is much more caring than before. He's ready to move on he has found the perfect balance between time for his self and caring for others, and Alex is talking how he is fine with his parents being together now.

Anonymous said...

The words of wisdom Alex gave Laurie just exlpain to her that everyone needs a second chance and you should tell people how you feel about them or what they are doing.
Alex has changed Alex in the begining problably wouldn't have even tried to help but list all the problems he is having and turn the sad fest into aq competetion of pity.

Anonymous said...

I think Alex realized that his advice to laurie can work with him and his parents, so he should take his advice. Yes, Alex has changed from the begging of the book.

Anonymous said...

The words that alex say his true to himself too... he is just starting to get a feeling of what is happening to his parents and him. he has finally forgiven them and them to him. he wants the same for laurie because he cares alot about her and doesnt want to see her in a bad mood. he is pretty much telling the both of them that everything will work out in the end. and be all right.

Anonymous said...

i think that alex thought that when you dont talk to your parents it can really hurt them like sol.

Anonymous said...

I think Alex looked at his situation From the oter caracters points of veiw.

Alex is trying to convince Laurie to accept her little sister and make it into somthing good.

Anonymous said...

alex has changed and alex is kind of being a hypocrite when he talks to laurie at her house

Anonymous said...

I think those wordes are very important. Alex has really changed. He isn't think of himself anymore, he is think of other people.
