Another BIG Idea

We just looked at this passage in another blog entry.

"What is it?"

"Alfredo. It's a creamy cheese sauce."

"Since when do you know how to make ANYTHING, much less a so-called 'creamy cheese sauce'"

"Oh Alex. Gimme a break. People can change, right? Now, taste it already."

"I don't know, Dad. I've been burned before."

What BIG idea does Sonnenblick want the reader to take from this passage? How is this BIG idea developed throughout the novel up to this point. Support your answer with SPECIFIC details from the text.

Sonnenblick wants readers to know that through periods of time, some people take interests into things unimaginable and learn to use their ability to make it work in their life. Like how Alex's dad is saying that people can change, people can take interest and change in their lives.

The big idea I think Sonnenblick is trying to make is that his dad can't make anything right, even though his mom as let him back in, his dad won't be fixing any realationship.

I do think people can change, but Sonnenblick is trying to tell people that Alex doesn't think he has changed. I think he has changed. He's come from an impulsive person to actually caring about people and things. For example when Annette and Stephen said that Alex wasn't ready for the concert. He defended what he knew was right, and he knew he could do it. He stood up for what he thought was right.

The BIG idea that Sonnenblick wants the reader to take from this passage is that Alex and his dad are not connecting in a way that will strengthen their relationship with one another. Sonnenblick wants the reader to understand that Alex is not quite over his dad's previous actions. With this the reader can understand that it takes time for a person to gain back the trust that was lost when they hurt or dissapointed someone they cared about.

The big idea is that Alex doesn't trust his dad and may never fully trust him again.

Sonnenblick wants the reader to take that passage as saying to give people second chances. You may mess up once but hopefully you realize it was wrong and go back and fix what you have done. The big idea has developed throughout this book by showing that his parents got divorced because his dad cheated on his mom. Then they went to dinner and that is where they started going "out." So Alex's mom gave his dad a second chance by one going on a "date" with him, and two giving him a chance to fix his mistakes for what he did. Also it has developed by when Alex got drunk and drove the Judge gave him a second chance by making him go back and fix his mistake by doing community service, which happened to be with her dad, Sol. So I think that Sonnenblick is trying to show people that you may and will mess up in life but people will give you second chances if you just try. :)

Alex is starting to interact with his father more than he has since his father left for his third grade teacher.

That when you hurt someone that they won't forget about it, and maybe how much of an impact people have on other people.

I think its the big idea of trust alex still cant trust his father so h dosent ant to do anything that involes him

Anonymous said...

that alex and his dad are starting to get back together and that his dad is really trying.

Throuout the novel we've seen alex's dad try, although not all taht hard, to get close to alex, alex is hesitent because his dad had left him before whats to stop it from happening again? I think deep down alex's dad is trying and deep down in alex he wants his dad to try harder and succeed.

Sonnenblick wants readers to know that Alex is still mad at his dad. And he is not ready for his dad to come back. Because he thinks his DAD left the family.

I think that Alex was trying to tell his dad that he is dissapointed in him, and he is not wanting him to change, because he has already toughed it out, and he has learned that he can take care of himself.

It shows Alex might still not fully trust his dad

Anonymous said...

Mabey he wants to show how people can change and that you should give them the chance.

Anonymous said...

I think that they were showing a kinda critism because alex has done bad things and people have forgiven him but he couldnt forgive his dad.

Anonymous said...

he is telling dad that he really hurt him in the past and idk if he was exactally ready for dad to come back

I think the big idea is that families dont always work out but you still have to love your family members even if they make stupid choices.

Anonymous said...

that people aren't always what they seem to be.

Anonymous said...

i think the BIG idea is that it takes more than just one idea to make a great desision

I think that he put that section in there to show that when you lose someone's trust, it will take a while to get back and you need to fix your mistakes from what you did in the past if it is possible.

I do think people can change. But I think Alex just doesn't think his dad has changed.

Anonymous said...

the big idea is that Alex does not seem to be going back to his dad that easily and that once trust is gone it takes alot of effort to get back.

Anonymous said...

He is trying to show that his father has let him down and he is not ready to forgive him yet. He has already done one bad thing to Alex.

It might be a secret little metaphore, though i think its a statement on getting the top of your mouth burned when you consume hot foods. Plus, I don't think Alex has fully forgiven his dad and doesn't completely trust him yet.

Anonymous said...

The big idea I thind is that Alex's still hasnt forgivin his dad yet and still ignores him constantly.

Anonymous said...

I think that this section was added into the story to help the reader to understand Alex's mixed emotions twords his dad at this point. I think that the section about Alex being burt before is his way of telling his dad that he has been hurt and is just waiting to be hurt again by the same mistake.

Anonymous said...

that his father burned his hart

Anonymous said...

I think that he is trying to show us that once you have lost the trust that it is hard to get it back because people say that they won't ever do it again or try to improve so they can get that trust back but they go right back and do it again. I think Alex doesn't want to get close to his dad because he doesn't want to set himself up to get hert again. I also don't think that Alex is ready for his dad to come back into his life because it might be hard for him to look at his father the same way cause I think he just sees a jerk that cheated with his third grade teacher and broke his his and his moms heart.

Anonymous said...

I think that Sonnenblick is trying to make a point that even if people change like Alex's dad people wont always forgive them right away.

Anonymous said...

i think the BIG idea is alex yes loves his dad, but still does not really trust him that much and is not sure if hes coming back into his life for good, so he dosent want to get too close just yet until he knows its for good.

Sonninblick was trying to tell people that life isn't what it seems to be. And to notice the people that care for you.

Anonymous said...

He wants us to see that Alex's dad is growing also in this book and that everybody deserves a second chance even though he screwed the first one up. I belive this bcause throughout the book, his dad cheated on his mom, but his mom accepted his sorry butt back.

Anonymous said...

the idea that Sonnenblick wants the reader to take is that people can burn you (hurt you) and most people hate being burned twice by the same person. by bring up alex's dad and mom's divorce throught the book.

I think the big idea in this passage the Sonnenblik is trying to make is that it is hard to forgive people. The points in the story that has shown this were when Alex first got drunk and drove because if he had forgiven his dad he would have never done this. When Sol's daughter would never come to see him or pick up her flowers this shows it because if she had forgiven Sol she would have come and got the flowers.

mr.s want us to take a big idea from this passige which is that alex is used to his dads cooking when alex was younger and his mom and dad were toghether

Anonymous said...

The idea is trust. he is streaching this idea because Alex doesnt really have much trust in his dad anymore

Anonymous said...

I think what Sonnenblick wants us to understand is that when Alex said the words " I don't know dad i've been burned before." I think he means that he isn't really sure if he trusts his dad completely yet, because first he is saying it was Alex's mom's fault about the divorce, he then said he was going to go to Philadelphia, and now he is getting back together with his ex-wife, and so I think that Alex is confused about his dad.

I think that the big idea in this paragraph is that he is trying to get Alex to realize that people really can change for the better. Alex just isnt realizing that and that is what sonnenblick is trying to say. Just like Alex has changed from being an impulsive person who only cares about himself to being someone who thinks things through and cares about other people and how he treats them. Even though Alex doesnt think his dad has changed he still needs to learn to trust him again so that maybe they can rebuild their relationship with eachother.

That the alfredo is hot, but when he said burn he means hurt and stabbed in the back before.

Anonymous said...

I think Sonnenblick is trying to get across that people DO change! Also I think he is trying to say that in rough times people turn to things others would have never thought they would turn to. Another big idea is that even though something happens once, doesn't always mean that it will work out that way again. Give things (and people) a second chance. Forgive. Move on.

Anonymous said...

I think Alex can still trust his dad but not as much...because of that all he has done.

Anonymous said...

I think Sonnenblick wants to show the readers how Alex holds a grudge for a long time. I think Alex's dad has changed or at least he is trying to. His dad wants things to work again between the familly.

Anonymous said...

Alex is trying to say he doesent want his dad back in his life yet.

Anonymous said...

I think the main idea is that alex dad can't reallly be trusted. You just can't get to close to him like alex ddid and her cheated on his mom and disapointed him.

Anonymous said...

I think that Alex isn't sure i fh ewants to trust his dad again. Because in the past he has let Alex down. Also the fact that he doesn't know what to do about his parents getting back together

Anonymous said...

i think alex is telling his dad that he isnt ready for him to come back in his life. and that he doesnt want him to run out on him and his mom again

Anonymous said...

I think Alex's dad is trying realy hard at makeing a good start.

Anonymous said...

It means Sol is saying everyone can change..and when he says now taste it he means go for it change

Alex is starting to interact with his father more than he has since his father left for his third grade teacher but he might still be mad at him for dooing so.

Anonymous said...

i think that alex is trying to tell his dad that in the past he really hurt alex and he still feels a little hurt that dad left him and his mom for that third grade teacher.

I think the big idea that Sonnenblick is trying to make is that alex dad is not perfect but he is really trying to make the good of everything... he thought going to pennsylvania was for the best at first but then he found out that just being there for alex's mom and alex he is right where he should be.

Anonymous said...

he is reminding his dad on how he let alex and alex's mom down and that he is not going to let his gaurd down just yet.

Anonymous said...

Alex does not trust his dad therefore he needs to earn Alex's trust back.

sonnenblick wanted the readers to get the BIG idea that people can change. even the arrogant ones
