Alex continues to battle his confusion towards life in general. From his parent's struggles at the beginning to his newfound attraction to Laurie, his life is a jumble of emotions. We see his conflicted emotions emerge on page 212-213 when talking with his dad.
"What is it?"
"Alfredo. It's a creamy cheese sauce."
"Since when do you know how to make ANYTHING, much less a so-called 'creamy cheese sauce'"
"Oh Alex. Gimme a break. People can change, right? Now, taste it already."
"I don't know, Dad. I've been burned before."
What does this exchange tell you about Alex's feelings towards his father? Are things any better with their relationship? Do you agree with Alex's feelings, or do you think he should lighten up a little? Why or why not?

I think that What Alex means by burned before is hes let his guard down before and trusted his father and loved him but then when they got a divorce Alex was really hurt by it and learned how to stay away from that hatred by blocking out most of his memories of loving his dad and is going to be really slow to open it. Its kinda like cat and mouse if the cat almost kills the mouse, the mouse will stay away from the cat.
I think Alex is pretty much saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me." because he has been hurt once and doesnt want to be hurt again.
I think alex is trying to show his dad that he cant be forgiven quite so easy... he hurt his mom and alex. alex doesnt know if he can trust his dad yet after all that has happened. he is testing his dad to see if he actual cares for him. he wants to like his dad but thinks of all of what his father done.
I think Alex's feelings toward his father are very mixed. For example, he's kind of glad.... I think..... that his mom and dad are getting back together. But he doesn't like his dad because he cheated on his mom with his his 3rd Grade Teacher...ewww..... Their relationship is starting to get a little tighter, but you can still tell that Alex does not like his dad. His dad is trying to make up for the mistakes that he made
I think their relationship sank faster then the titanc and though again like the titanc we were able to find some of the pieces left from the ship, we will never be able to pull the ENTIRE titanc out of the water, and i can sorta agree to alex's feelings becuase of the postion he is in, but i also think that everyone desivrese a second chance and that Alex should lighten up on his dad.
I think Alex doesn't trust his dad completly yet. Their relationship is getting better but still needs some work. When Alex's mom dropped the picture and Alex's dad showed to be a caring husband that really showed Alex that his dad cares for his mom and loves her and is ready to get back in the saddle
i think Alex feels that his dad is doing the right thing but he doesn't trust his dad because when he was little he had full trust in him then he cheated on his mom and he was kinda the whole reason Alex did this accident so he doesn't have full respect/trust. Also i think Alex does need to lighten up a little because his dad is trying really, really hard with the whole family thing. I can understand why Alex acts that way, even though i would never ever in my life get by with talking to my parents like that without getting in trouble. hah. But his father really did betray him by cheating on his mother and threatening to move away and nnot telling him exactly why. That would make me suspicious. And it would take alot more then a setence saying "People change, right?" to get me to trust him again. So if i were Alex i wouldn't think it is that necessary to lighten up towards his dad.
Alex loves his dad but I think he still is a little upset with is dad for what he did to his mom. So he is not totally going to give his dad a break...I couldn't blame him. Yes, things are lots better with their relationship because before he wouldn't even talk to his dad and now he talks to his dad lots more. I agree with Alex's feelings but he should lighten up a bit because his dad is trying. Life is about giving people second chances so Alex should too.
I think Alex is angry with his dad, and thinks he will get burned again. They havn't really had a good past, his dad leaving him and his mom for another women. I do think Alex should lighten up and forgive his dad. I think he can change.
I think Alex thinks that his dad doesn't really care about him, because when he said you never used to make anything, it seems like Alex's dad maybe never really helped making dinner, or anything and is confused, and not sure if he trusts his dad, because first he said, about the divorce, that it was Alex's mom's fault, then he said he was going to move to Philadelphia, and now he is getting back together with his mom, so I think Alex thinks his parents are gonna break up again. And he is just confused with his parents rightnow.
yes i think alex should lighten up because his dad is starting to do things nice.
It shows alex has realy been hurt by his dad and still feels it and is maybe afraid of being hurt again. His dad ment a lot to him and had a big impact on alex and then hurts him.
I think that Alex is trying to use the food his dad made as a sarcastic way to show that he still doesnt trust him as much as he did before the divorce.
They are a little better because alex is actually talking to each other than hiding in there own shells.
He cant trust him, and i would never trust unless he proves that he is there to stay and that i know he would not do anything to hurt alex or his mother in anyway
I think alex is still cautiouse because by burned before he meant it in more way than one. He doesn't completely trust his father, and with good reason, he can't decide if he should be close to his father with the possibility of being hurt again or to distance himself to lessen the pain.
Well alex feels hate towards his father. I understand this because he thinks his dad left his mom. And then just paid the band members in the resturaunt to play their wedding song. So he thinks his dad has i guess betrayed him and his mom in a way.
I think Alex is still upset with his dad. I agree in a way because if a parent did that to me I would do the same thing and I disagree with him in a way because you shoulden't hold a grudge because the only one it herts is you.
I think Alex should lighten up a little, he doesn't need to trust his father but he should give him the chance to change. I think that Alex means that his father has hurt him before other than cooking. And he is just showing his father that he is still not on good grounds with him.
I think that Alex does need to lighten up. His dad is trying and Alex needs to realize that people do change and you have to forgive people for making mistakes.

I do not think Alex has tried to increase his relationship with his father. He is still mad at him and making himself bring back things that might have been bad bad from the past into the present.

I think Alex's relationship with his dad at this point is unchanged. Alex still doesn't exept his father after dumping his mom.
He is still upset with his father because of what he did. I could understand why Alex would be upset with his dad but he is lighting up a little compared to the beggining of the book.
I think alex is saying that he doesnt want his dad back in his life he thinks his dads a fool to even try , he jst dosent want to see his mom or him get hurt again
I think Alex is trying to say to his dad is that he doesn't trust him the way Alex's dad is suspecting him to do, and that Alex's dad thinking he is all forgiven.
This shows that Alex's feelings toward his dad are still very bitter. He is still very hurt by him and I don't think their relationship has changed very much. I think that Alex should lighten up though.
yes it does tell you alex's feelings towards his dad. No, at this point nothing is any better relationship wise. i agree with alex b/c he has been burned (hurt) by his dad before, so it's smart to be a little cautious.

I think that the conversation with Alex and his dad was very helpful to get his feelins to his dad. I think that when Alex said that he had been bured befor he was refering to being hurt and it affecting his view on choices. Examples of that are if you litterly get burnt by a hot objet you will be weriy to attempt to hold, touch, or taste it again. Another example is if you tell someone a secret and they tell everyone then you will be hurt and you will think twice about telling that person a secret again.

I think that when Alex said that he has been burned before he ment that it is hard to fogive his dad for not caring for him. Forgive and Forget.
This exchange tells me that Alex’s feelings for his father are mixed because he is at least talking to his father but he is not talking to him in the nicest way. I would say things are better because Alex seems to tolerate his dad living in his house and he is talking to him witch is a big improvement from not talking to him at all. Yes I agree with Alex’s feelings because if a person did something in the past it is hard to forgive them and form your relationship to the level it once was.
i agree very much with alex and i think that alexand his dad are much closer together that they were before

I think that this is telling us that Alex is not ready to trust his father yet and he doesnt want to trust him to soon and end up being dissapionted in his father again. He is just trying to save himself that heart brake on more time. Instead he is waiting to see if his dad is really trustworthy or not. Even though his dad may be trying to make up for the mistakes that he has made. Alex just doesnt know if he can trust him or not.

I think this is showing that Alex is really thinking that maybe his dad isn't so bad afterall. I mean he is actually TALKING to him... this in itself is a change!! I do agree with Alex's feelings because everyone is going to make mistakes (Alex made a huge one already!!) but you have got to learn to forgive and forget. His dad and mom are obviously starting to forgive Alex, so I think that Alex should return the favor, even if it is very hard.
I think Alex was shocked for a secound that his dad cooked for him, because he must not have done that for him before. His dad changed and became more responsible, and Alex didnt take that the best. But Alex should have gave him a break like his dad said.
