To this point in the novel, Alex and Solomon have been seperated by a gulf of many decades. Alex is just beginning his adulthood years as Solomon endures his final chapter. Yet despite the generational gap, their lives share many parallels.
As Sol pours out his heart to Alex, he emphasizes his daughter by saying, "Anyway, we had a daughter--Judy. Cute, with a smart mouth. Always with the smart mouth. I was gone too much playing the damn guitar, but I spent enough time at home to know Judy was going to be SOMETHING someday." (172)
For what purpose do you think Solomon would have shared this detail about Judy with Alex? Did he want Alex to take something from that comment? What and why?

I dont think he wanted alex to take anything from it, it was just another detail of Mr. Lewis life.
I think solomon wants alex NOT to be like Judy, he wants him to be much better then her, and i also think solomon said that because lx is like family to him now he's the only family he has in a way except the nursing home
I think Sol was emphasizing Laurie in a way, and I also think that Sol doesn't want Alex to loose her, so he is trying to make it more, and wanting to make their relationship better.
I think that Solomon wants Alex to be really succesfull like Judy. He just doesnt want him to abandon his parents like Judy did. I think that Solomon really considers Alex as his own son now since they are together so often. He really wants him to succeed.
I think that Solomon was explaining that Alex reminds him of his daughter. I think that Solomon doesn't want Alex to turn out like his daughter did because she didn't become what he thought she would.
I think Sol wanted Alex to take from the comment that Soloman Lewis had a life outside the nursing home and that he had done stuff in life before he was dump in the home

i think that Solomon shared this detail b/c to show that you shouldn't always think of yourself, and others around you can help you.
I think he wanted to tell Alex that Laurie is almost like Judy in a sort of way that they are sort of cute. However, he does not want Alex to not like Laurie, he wants someone to be able to love her, maybe how he wants Judy to endure the loving Sol is trying to give to her.
I think he wanted to tell Alex how much he loved his daugther and how sad he was that he didn't get to see much of her childhood.
I think he shared this detail with Alex because he wants him to know that even though he and his parents don't talk to much, they still know about him and think as highly of him as they would if he were to see them all the time. Also, I think Sol wanted him to be assured that it doesn't matter what you are when you grow up, as long as you are SOMETHING... you will be successful and I think Sol really wants Alex to know this so he has support behind him and the desire to push hard in life because he knows that there is someone there backing him up...
I think he talked about Judy to compare her to alex and to tell the story about his wife. and show that alex is not the only one who has been mad at their dad. Judy was mad at sol for letting this happen to her mom. and sol told him this to show that things could be worse.
i think Sol wants to alex to take something from it because he wants alex to grow up to be somebody but he doesnt want alex to forget about his friends and family when he grows up and moves on in life
i think Solomon wants to get the point that drunk driving/drivers aren't a good influence because if that wouldn't have happened possibly Sol and Judy would have a closer relationship then they do now
When Sol shares his past with Alex I think he believed Alex was smart and would learn that no matter what family is the most important factor when it comes to priorities. I also believe that Solomon wanted to explain to Alex why it is so important to "think before you act." Sol was trying to help Alex so that he would not make the same mistakes and he wants Alex to be something better than the person he's on the road to become. Finaly I think Sol needed to tell some one trustworthy of his experience so that he wouldn't keep it bottled up.
I don't think that he wanted alex to learn anything just wanted him to know his story. And although Sol may not know it he wants to show Alex that he is fond of Alex and likes having him around.
I think Sol is saying that he believed in her and knew she would do someting beside play guitar like he did, and that he believes Alex will do something good in his life like Judy did.
i think that sol shared this with alex because he wanted him to know that his daughter was the judge to have alexes case and that judy knew all about it
I think that Sol told Alex this because he wanted to let him know to keep playing the guitar but dont put it in front of your family. Also i think he wanted to let him know about his daughter and maybe him think about who she is...
It almost seems like Sol is blaming himself for why Judy never comes to see him. Maybe he brought up the topic about Judy to Alex to show him that family should come before anything or it could result in regrets further in life.

possibly but i dont really know maybe its find the woman whos perfect for you and have as much time as possible with her becuase the world will eventually take that away.nothing lives forever, enjoy it while you can. i guess thats what sol was trying to tell him.
He want to make the point that if Alex ever became BIG then he shouldn't foget what really matters and stay focused on reality.
I think that it was saying the consequense for his mistake. And that a car crash and drunk driving is a big thing. Also because he misses her and he is just leatting his feelings out and mistakes to Alex at the time.

I think that Solomon said what he did to Alex, so that Alex wouldn't make the same mastake that he did. I think that Solomon was really sad by telling Alex about his bad memories but it also helped him.

I think that Solomon told Alex about his daughter Judy, because he was ashamed of what he did in his earlier years, and he was trying to tell Alex something, or just tell about his life, because Alex was asking him about it.
I think slomon wants alex to be as succesfull as judy. Either mentally or phiscally like in education. Solomon really cares about alex and doesn't want him to choose bad choices like his "oh so brilliant plan" at the beginning of the story.
I think that Mr. Lewis is trying to get through to Alex with the point that he knows what it is like to be a kid. Also that Alex reminds Sol of his daughter.
i think that he shared that because he wanted to show that just because alex never asked dosnt mean that he never did any thing wrong and i think that they are foreshadowing something to come.

Maybe he knew his daughter was the judge that gave alex his sentence. He's just wanting Alex to find that out. Maybe it will help Alex some way in the future, I don't know how though

i think that soloman wanted alex to learn that drunk driving is really not for him and can hurt your love ones. he wanted alex to know why he is hurting and to give him a hint about why people never come to see him. he tried but failed but wants to keep going and never stop and learn from your mistakes

I think Solonom shared so many details with Alex to tell him about his daughter and to tell him that anyone can become what they want to be. Yes, he did want Alex to take something from it, he showed that if you try, you can become someone great, even if you have made mistakes. Also if your parents aren't around much you can still do great things. Also, I think he was kind of telling Alex that he wanted Alex to be great when he becomes other and do great things and that Sol is proud of Alex.
Sol shared this news with Alex because he wants Alex to care and Sol is reffering to Judy as Alex and Laurie.
I think Judge Judy is is Sol's daughter.
It seems that he wanted him to learn on how Sol was not around alot and payed more attention to his guitar. He wanted alex to appreciate life and the people in it.
He was just letting Alex know why he quit playing the guitar. What Sol told alex was very important.

I think that Solomon told Alex about his past because Sol has been through a lot and that has made him how he is today and he donest want to see Alex do the same.

He probably wanted to let Alex know that no matter what bad desicions they decide to do when they are young, that they will grow and learn from them and be somthing great. Sol's daughter had a smart mouth and she became a lawyer. Alex may become a community service providor or a counsiler.
